Haggarty steps down at Whitehaven
PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Coal miner Whitehaven Coal has appointed Paul Flynn as its new MD and CEO after Tony Haggarty announced that he would be leaving the company on March 25.
Haggarty, who had been MD and CEO of Whitehaven since 2008, would remain as a nonexecutive director of the board, following his retirement. He would also assist with the management transition.
“As advised at the annual general meeting in November, a succession planning process has been under way for some time, and has become more focused following the organisational restructure implemented after the merger between Whitehaven and Aston Resources,” said Whitehaven chairperson Mark Vaile.
“A thorough executive search process has been carried out, with consideration of a number of candidates. During the process, it became clear that Flynn’s combination of resource industry experience, financial acumen and executive leadership skills form a highly attractive combination with our recently expanded senior management team," he added.
Flynn has been a nonexecutive director of Whitehaven since the Aston merger in May of last year, prior to which he was the MD of Tinkler Group Holdings from April 2011.
Before that, Flynn spent 18 years with Ernst & Young.
Meanwhile, Vaile said that the succession planning process had not been limited to the MD and CEO role, with the company looking to develop its management capabilities in line with its growth trajectory and the associated increase in complexity and size.
“Flynn’s appointment completes this process and delivers us a very experienced, well-qualified, balanced and capable team to manage Whitehaven’s growth and deliver ongoing value for shareholders.”
