Grow the industrial base using new technologies that make low volumes competitive

New opportunities for local industrialisation are unfolding, thanks to modern technologies that ensure that even low-volume production can be globally competitive. South Africa must look to using these technologies to grow its manufacturing base.

Already under way are focused interventions by the Presidency to build infrastructure. On this list of infrastructure investments are reportedly ‘shovel-ready’ projects in energy, water, sanitation, roads, bridges, housing, health, education and transport. Ride on the coattails of the parts of these interventions that have potential to stimulate industrialisation.

Select the opportunities that can be competitively realised and market intensely. Be as green as you can, act short and look long. Further along the line is the potential link to African value chains, on a continent that is already mandated to implement free trade areas.
