Government must join the platinum group metals promotion effort

South Africa is blessed with the planet’s largest endowment of platinum group metals (PGMs) but is not doing enough to promote this, at a time when PGM demand faces a potential decade of strength. PGMs must be more strongly promoted by South Africa Incorporated.

Government in general and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) in particular must publicly support the promotion of PGMs, which are an integral part of the South African economy as well as the hydrogen age that is sweeping the world.

The DMRE needs to permit mining companies in general and PGM-mining companies in particular to generate as much renewable energy as their operations require, minus the red tape. Renewable energy and PGMs go hand-in-hand because the world is demanding the green hydrogen that only renewables and PGMs can give it.

South Africa Incorporated must also take immediate steps to promote the local use of green hydrogen in mobility and industry. Failure to do so will, down the line, inhibit the vast potential of PGMs and hurt us in a world demanding clean and green manufacture of exported goods.
