TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Vancouver-based Goldcorp is evacuating employees from the Éléonore project owing to forest fires in the James Bay region of Quebec.

A fire, currently located about 100 km from Éléonore was advancing with prevailing winds towards the mine site, prompting the company to halt all construction activity.

Goldcorp said a crew would remain at the site to manage and implement preventive emergency measures. The company added that it was working with local and provincial authorities to safeguard the health and safety of all people in the area.

The 600 000 oz/y Éléonore project is one of the company’s significant and critical growth components and was on target for first production in late 2014.
