St Barbara gold production falls
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner St Barbara has reported a slight decline in production for the three months to December, as its Pacific operations delivered less-than-impressive results.
For the quarter under review, the ASX-listed company produced 93 577 oz of gold, compared with the first quarter production of 96 739 oz for the period ended September.
The Australian operations, which include the Gwalia mine and King of the Hills, produced a combined 69 757 oz during the quarter, compared with the 70 479 oz produced in the September quarter.
Gwalia was responsible for the majority of production, delivering 52 552 oz during the quarter, compared with the 53 230 oz produced in the previous three months.
Gold production at the Simberi operation, in Papua New Guinea, was significantly lower during the quarter as commissioning delays of the new processing plant affected operations, along with the poor reliability of the grinding circuit.
Simberi produced only 8 908 oz during the quarter under review, compared with the 11 741 oz produced in the three months to September.
At Gold Ridge, in the Solomon Islands, St Barbara produced 14 912 oz during the quarter, which was in line with the 14 519 oz produced in the previous quarter. A significant plant upgrade to reduce downtime and increase recoveries was completed in November, and St Barbara reported that gold recoveries in December increased to 70%, with record plant throughput also reported.
The miner was currently reviewing further investment into the Gold Ridge project after a detailed metallurgy study identified that investment in a refractory circuit was required to increase gold recoveries to 80%.
An investment decision is expected in late February.
