JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Gold producer Gold Fields on Monday said it had agreed to sell its Biox and Aster refractory gold processing solutions to newly established venture Biomin South Africa.

Biomin, which would comprise 11 of the Gold Fields management, metallurgists and process engineers that developed and implemented the technology, would continue to provide services and support for the two proprietary technologies.

The team had been responsible for the development and implementation of Biox in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and Aster over the past five years.

“Gold Fields is implementing major strategic change throughout the organisation and it was felt that the Biox and Aster technologies would best be served under a focused and experienced management team capable of further improving the process solutions we have developed over the last two decades,” said Gold Fields executive VP of technical services Tim Rowland.

The deal included the restructuring of the existing contracts, which included ten different gold mining companies on five continents, as well as all patents from Gold Fields, into the new company.

“Our team is geared to demonstrate these technologies to numerous other mining entities, some of which have displayed strong interest and where pilot projects are already under way,” commented Biomin South Africa MD Jan van Niekerk.

Biomin’s management also had experience in a variety of other metallurgical processes, including crushing and milling, tank cyanide leaching, bioleaching and carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-leach adsorption systems, as well as electrowinning and smelting, gravity concentration, sulphide flotation and process control and optimisation.
