Artisanal gold miners go for gold on a farm 40 km north of Harare, owned by former President Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace Mugabe, in Mazowe, Zimbabwe. The ironically named Smithfield farm, once guarded by armed police, is now dotted with gold diggings. The illegal miners have stated that they intend selling the gold they extract to Fidelity Printers & Refiners, the sole buyer of all gold produced in Zimbabwe. The area is covered by the Ministry of Mines, which has said it cannot interfere, as the case is before court, which follows the filing of a theft report. Reuters reported that neither Grace Mugabe nor her lawyer could be reached for comment.
