South African explosives and speciality chemicals group AECI has appointed Godfrey Gomwe nonexecutive director, effective January 31.

Gomwe spent the last 26 years in executive positions in the metals and mining industry, including 15 years with mining giant Anglo American.

He previously served as Anglo American Thermal Coal’s CE and was also responsible for Anglo American’s manganese interests in joint venture with BHP Billiton.

During his career, Gomwe developed and led the execution of major business repositioning and transformation strategies. He was also a leader in driving safety culture and performance in the workplace.

He also has experience in working with governments and political organisations in several African countries, as well as in the areas of venture capital and private equity.

“Gomwe is passionate about job creation, food security and sustainable poverty alleviation in Southern Africa and is involved in several charitable causes through his chairpersonhip of Tshikululu Social Investments,” AECI said in a statement.
