Global trade association AED says US-Canada spat can be detrimental for equipment suppliers
International trade association Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) says it is disappointed that the US and Canada could not come to a trade agreement during recent negotiations.
AED's stance is to support free and fair trade in North America as the best means for achieving economic prosperity and growth in the sectors that AED's members work in.
"Tariffs and retaliatory tariffs damage the economies on both sides of the border. Any measures that target equipment that builds, feeds and fuels both countries are detrimental regardless of if they're imposed by Canada or the US. AED will continue to work with officials and political leaders on both sides of the border to encourage a return to the bargaining table," the association states.
For context, talks between the US and Canada collapsed on Friday after the US introduced last-minute demands, which Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney deemed uneconomic and damaging to Canadian sovereignty.
US President Donald Trump earlier this month enacted 50% tariffs on about $20-billion worth of Canadian imports.
Carney said Canada is now under economic attack by the US and affirmed that the country would set retaliatory levies to match US tariffs dollar-for-dollar.
