Glencore appoints first female director
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Diversified mining giant Glencore has announced the selection of its first female board member, appointing Patrice Merrin independent nonexecutive director with immediate effect.
Following initial roles at beer producer Molson and railway company Canadian Pacific, Merrin was employed as COO of Canadian diversified miner Sherritt until 2004, before occupying the role of CEO at Luscar – Canada’s largest thermal coal producer.
She was also a director of the Alberta Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation between 2009 and 2014, and was a member of the Canadian Advisory Panel on Sustainable Energy Science and Technology between 2005 and 2006.
Merrin is currently a nonexecutive director of New York-listed Stillwater Mining Company, after being proposed by activist investors in a proxy contest, and was recently proposed by activist investors for the boards of commodity supply-chain group MFC Industrial and resources firm Cliffs Natural Resources.
Glencore chairperson Tony Hayward said Merrin’s in-depth experience in operating across the resources sector would strengthen the board's ability to work with the opportunities and challenges presented by the global extractive industry.
“Her record of nonexecutive director appointments, activist involvement and industry advisory board service is also an excellent complementary skill set to our board,” he noted.
Commenting on the appointment, fund manager SP Angel said Merrin would bring useful mining experience to the board and appeared to have a combination of thermal coal experience and knowledge on climate change issues.
“This background could be useful for Glencore, which now has higher thermal coal exposure with Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton looking to downplay their exposure to that sector,” stated the firm.
