FROM METALS HUB TO WASTELAND

Refik Nuhanovic carries a bag of coal from the conveyor of a coal mine in Zivinice, near Tuzla, in north-eastern Bosnia, which is a former-metals-industry-hub-turned-wasteland – and the home to one in five of Bosnia’s 27% registered unemployed. This month’s worker unrest blew the lid off years of simmering postwar discontent, with rioters also setting fire to government buildings in Sarajevo, Zenica and Mostar. Several hundred people were injured, most of them police in clashes with protesters. This is no longer an argument about national identity but an economic war that reflects the anger of the poor against the political elites, wrote one newspaper. Tuzla was once the industrial centre of Tito’s Yugoslavia.
