PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore major Fortescue Metals on Thursday announced that it had completed the $2.4-billion expansion of its port facilities in Port Hedland, increasing capacity to 155-million tonnes a year.

The port expansion included the construction of two new berths, a second and third outloading and inloading circuit, two shiploaders, two reclaimers, one stacker, two train unloaders, 15.5 km of conveyor systems, transfer stations, drive stations, two sample stations, power and control systems and associated infrastructure.

The company said that the official opening of its fourth berth at the Herb Elliott port, took Fortescue a crucial step closer to completing its $9-billion expansion to triple production capacity across its mine, rail and port operations by the end of 2013.

“We’ve taken a significant step towards the completion of our expansion to 155-million tonnes a year. Our world-class infrastructure at Herb Elliott port will support a substantial increase in shipments of ore from our Pilbara operations to customers in China and South East Asia,” said CEO Nev Power.

He noted that Fortescue was only months away from completing the final leg of its expansion, which was the construction of the 40-million-tonne-a-year Kings mine, at the Solomon Hub.

“This will see Fortescue complete its major investment and construction phase and embark on a new era as a highly efficient, low-cost operator of world-class mine, port and rail assets across the Pilbara.”

Fortescue has also received approval to construct a fifth berth at Herb Elliott port, which would allow the company to further develop its berth configuration. Construction on this berth was expected to start later this year.
