TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Canadian gold miner Agnico-Eagle Mines on Thursday announced several senior management team appointments, among which former Barrick Gold CFO Ammar Al-Joundi was named the company’s new president effective from April 6.

Al-Joundi had previously been CFO of Toronto-based Agnico.

Agnico CEO Sean Boyd’s title would change to vice-chairperson and CEO, the company said in a press release.

Al-Joundi would report to Boyd and assist him and the senior management team in setting and executing on Agnico Eagle’s corporate strategy, optimising the corporate structure and management processes, developing the next generation of senior management and building asset value through effective capital structure allocation and risk management, the company said.

Agnico also announced the appointment of Dominique Girard as VP for technical services and Nunavut operations.

The company said it saw Nunavut as an excellent platform to add significant long-term value to its businesses and was currently studying various options and alternatives to capitalise on the large and growing resource base  in Nunavut and to maximise its value.

The Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) had earlier this month given Agnico Eagle the green light for the company's second Nunavut gold mine, Meliadine. Agnico planned to mine and process gold at the site near Rankin Inlet.

The Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development had accepted NIRB's recommendation that the Meliadine project be given the go-ahead, and the board had issued the company a project certificate.

The Review Board attached 127 conditions to the project certificate covering everything from wildlife monitoring to air quality control.

Agnico already successfully operated the Meadowbank mine, near Baker Lake, located in the Nunavut Territory.

Agnico also on Thursday said it had promoted Michael Timmins to VP of corporate development; appointed Carol Plummer as VP for project development in the US and Latin America; and appointed Michel Julien as VP for environment.
