PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Engineering, procurement and services provider Forge has been awarded a A$1.47-billion contract for the construction of a processing facility at the Roy Hill iron-ore mine, in Western Australia.

Forge said on Monday that it would joint venture with Spanish group Duro Felguera on project delivery.

The scope of the engineering, procurement and construction contract included the construction of a 55-million-tonne-a-year iron-ore processing plant as well as all detailed structural earthworks, foundations, steelwork, mechanical equipment, plate work, piping, electrical equipment, instrumentation and controls, cabling, conveyors and in-plant roads.

Site construction was expected to start in December, and would be fully completed by September 2015. At its peak, the project would employ a workforce of some 1 300 people, Forge said.

The Roy Hill operation was expected to produce some 55-million tons a year, and would include a 344 km heavy-haul railway and new berths at Port Hedland. The project was expected to start production in 2015.
