Fitzgerald shy on due date for Roy Hill
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore developer Roy Hill’s CEO Barry Fitzgerald is hesitant to give a new date for the first shipments of iron-ore from the $10-billion Roy Hill mine, in the Pilbara, after the project missed its September 30 target.
“We would hope to see first ore on ship sometime in November, but, recognising that the commissioning is problematic, it will be when it will be,” he said on the sidelines of a Committee for Economic Development of Australia event on Wednesday.
“It's not a matter of not trying, it's simply a matter of going through the processes. It’s a complex plan and we have commissioned many parts of it,” he added.
Fitzgerald on Wednesday pointed out that one of the most significant challenges for Roy Hill was the company delivering on its stated targets.
“At this point, as we look at our project, one of the challenges we now face is to do what I have said to people we need to do.
“We are a margin-focused business. We are about to ramp up from zero to 55-million tonnes. We are doing that rapid increase in production at a time when we need to show that we remain focused on costs. That is a challenge for us.”
However, Fitzgerald expressed confidence that the company could meet its targets.
The Roy Hill project comprised an openpit mine, a 55-million-tonne-a-year wet processing plant, 344 km of rail line and a two-berth iron-ore port facility at Port Hedland.
