First turbine components arrive for Eastern Cape wind project
The first two shiploads of wind-turbine components have landed in the Port of Ngqura, in the Eastern Cape, from where they will be transported by road to the MetroWind Van Stadens wind farm site, in the Eastern Cape.
The R550-million 27 MW project is being developed by Rubicept, a special-purpose project company established to develop, operate and main- tain the project, which is backed by Old Mutual, Basil Read Energy, Afri-Coast Engineers, Spilled Water Renewable Energy and the Metrowind Community Trust.
Basil Read Matomo has been appointed the engineering, procurement and construction contractor and construction has been under way for five months.
The erection of the turbines, which are being supplied by Sinovel Wind Group, of China, is expected to begin by August and commercial operations are scheduled to start on February 1, 2014.
Basil Read Matomo director of energy Marius von Wielligh describes the arrival of the turbines as a significant milestone, noting that civil works are nearing completion with all nine wind turbine bases having already been completed.
Also under construction are the individual turbine mini- substations and the main control building. Electrical works have also started and will peak within the next few weeks.
The MetroWind Van Stadens project, which was selected as a preferred project during the first bidding round under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, is expected to produce 80 000 MWh yearly.
