The first ore from the Saramacca openpit has been delivered to the Rosebel gold mill, in Suriname, using an alternate road while construction of the haul road continued.

The new Saramacca openpit, located about 25 km from the Rosebel mill, would contribute nominal production in the fourth quarter, TSX-listed Iamgold said on Thursday.

“We have delivered on our promise of first ore from Saramacca at Rosebel in the fourth quarter of 2019, having declared reserves just over a year ago. We look forward to progressing the ramp-up of Saramacca to full production,” said Iamgold president and CEO Steve Letwin.

The Saramacca deposit increased the consolidated reserves of Rosebel by one-million ounces to 4.7-million ounces. The deposit has a measured and indicated resource of 1.2-million ounces, for a total Rosebel measured and indicated resource of 9.3-million ounces.

Saramacca will operate for 14.5 years, during which time it will produce 1.3-million ounces, or an average of 98 000 oz/y. When Saramacca is in full production between 2020 and 2032, Rosebel will produce an average of 295 000 oz/y.

Iamgold in August lowered its guidance for Rosebel, following an illegal miner incident that resulted in the closure of the pits. Operations resumed in the northern pits about a week after the suspension and in the southern pits more than a month later.

The group’s guidance for 2019 is to produce between 765 000 oz and 810 000 oz.
