PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Metals developer Finders Resources has started copper cathode production at its Wetar Island project, in Indonesia.

The miner said on Tuesday that the Wetar Island solvent extraction electrowinning plant would process solutions from heaps of newly stacked ore and was expected to produce some 3 000 t/y.

First cathode was expected by mid-April, and first shipments of copper would leave site by the end of the month.

“We are pleased to be planting copper again on Wetar Island,” said Finders MD Barry Cahill.

“The cathode produced will provide cash flow and momentum as Finders proceeds with financing and then starts construction of the main 25 000 t/y plant,” he added.

At full production, Wetar would deliver some 28 000 t/y of copper cathode, with full capacity expected to be reached within 15 months of the start of on-site construction.

Full production was currently earmarked for the third quarter of 2015. Life-of-mine copper production was estimated at 155 000 t, over a planned 10.5-year production period.
