The final environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Pebble copper/gold project, in Alaska, will be published in the federal register next week, Pebble Partnership CEO Tom Collier said on Wednesday.

The US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) previously targeted July 15 to publish the final EIS, and Collier said that a new date of July 24 did not mean a major delay.

"Some have expressed concern that failure to publish the final EIS today, as was earlier targeted by the USACE, is evidence of a major delay to the final EIS. This is not the case.

"Throughout this review process, the USACE has closely tracked their timeline and public projections for process milestones. Our project team looks forward to reviewing the final document next week and then getting ready for initiating state permitting,” he said in a statement.

The USACE will use the EIS as it prepares for a record of decision for the project.

The preliminary version of the EIS, released in February, indicated that the project could co-exist with the fisheries and water resources of Bristol Bay. Conservationists, local activists, fishermen and federal regulators argue that industrial, openpit mining operations to extract the bounty threatens the region’s flourishing sockeye salmon fishery.
