Multinational technology company ABB’s Terra DC Fast Charger is positioned as a solution that advances both energy efficiency and sustainability in the electric vehicle (EV) charging industry, ABB product marketing specialist for smart power Veron Maharaj says, adding that the charger leverages advanced technologies to optimise power use and support the broader transition to clean transportation.

The Terra DC Fast Charger is specifically designed to be highly efficient compared to conventional charging systems. Maharaj explains that the charger minimises energy losses during the charging process, ensuring that more of the electricity drawn from the grid is used directly to charge vehicles, rather than being lost as heat.

By shortening the charging duration, the charger also decreases the time during which it draws power, thereby conserving energy and reducing the load on electrical infrastructure. Maharaj acknowledges that fast chargers can increase energy consumption, owing to the high power they draw, but stresses that the overall energy consumption can be managed through strategic planning.

Further, the Terra DC Fast Charger features dynamic power-sharing capabilities, enabling it to distribute power efficiently between multiple vehicles. This optimisation minimises energy waste and reduces overall energy demand.

Dynamic DC Power Sharing is a core feature and allows the system to allocate power between vehicles based on demand. The charger also incorporates high-efficiency power electronics that ensure minimal energy loss during the AC-to-DC conversion process, he notes.

This has significant implications for fleet operations, with Maharaj noting that they could implement optimised charging schedules to take advantage of off-peak hours to reduce energy costs. The use of smart energy management systems also helps balance the load on the grid and mitigate peak demand charges.

ABB’s smart energy management systems can also dynamically adjust charging power based on grid demand, which also helps to balance the load and reduce peak demand charges.

Maharaj explains that smart charging technologies and remote software updates further enhance energy efficiency, making the charger a sustainable solution for both commercial and individual users.

The modular design of the charger allows for scalable power output, meaning it can adapt to the specific needs of each vehicle.

ABB also supports a wide voltage range of up to 920 V, ensuring compatibility with multiple EV models.

Public charging stations equipped with the Terra DC Fast Charger also contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions, particularly in urban areas. Maharaj  points out that these stations encourage the adoption of EVs by providing fast and convenient charging options, which in turn reduces the number of internal combustion engine vehicles on the road.

Moreover, the charger can integrate with renewable-energy sources such as solar panels, further reducing its carbon footprint. This integration not only promotes the use of clean energy but also ensures a more sustainable energy supply.

According to Maharaj , these features make the Terra DC Fast Charger ideal for urban environments, where fast and reliable charging is crucial, and where energy efficiency and sustainability are equally important.

“This shift lowers overall emissions and improves air quality in densely populated cities. Additionally, the integration of renewable-energy sources at public charging stations supports the goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels,” he says.

Looking Ahead

As EV adoption increases, ABB is committed to continuing its innovation within the EV charging space to further reduce energy use and environmental impact.

The company is exploring new technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells in collaboration with renewable-energy company AFC Energy, aiming to create high-power, zero-emission charging solutions.

These efforts, coupled with ongoing improvements in smart charging technologies and sustainable manufacturing practices, reflect ABB’s dedication to driving the future of sustainable transportation and energy efficiency.
