ERA ups output at Ranger
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Uranium miner Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) has reported a slight increase in its December quarter production, compared with the three months to September, as production from the Ranger mine continued to ramp up.
During the three months to December, the Ranger mine, in the Northern Territory, delivered 599 t of uranium oxide (U3O8). This was up 6% on the previous quarter’s production, but a 19% decline on the previous corresponding period.
Total production for 2014 reached 1 165 t of U3O8, which was 61% less than the previous full year.
Plant operations at the Ranger mine were suspended in December 2013, after a mixture of slurry moved outside the containment area, following the failure of a leach tank.
The miner undertook a progressive restart of the Ranger processing plant in June last year, after receiving approval from the state and federal governments.
Progressive rehabilitation of the Ranger project area continued during the quarter, and following the completion of the initial backfill of Pit 3 during the September quarter of last year, the infrastructure to enable Pit 3 to receive tailings for final deposition, was installed.
Meanwhile, ERA reported that the draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for its proposed Ranger 3 Deeps underground mine was lodged with the relevant authorities in October of last year, with the public consultation period closing on December 12.
A supplementary EIS was expected in the first half of 2015.
A prefeasibility study on the Rangers 3 Deep mine was also scheduled to go before the company’s board in the first quarter of next year.
