Vancouver-based Taseko Mines has received an initial draft of the underground injection control (UIC) permit required for a commercial-scale facility at its Florence copper project, in Arizona.

The project technical team would complete a review of the wording within the two-week allotted timeframe, following which the EPA would start a public comment period.

CEO Stuart McDonald said in a media statement on Monday that detailed engineering and procurement activities were well advanced and that the company would be ready to kick off construction of the commercial facility immediately upon issuance of the final UIC permit.

The Florence project has an 18-month construction schedule.

The in-situ copper recovery process that Taseko is proposing at Florence uses water and sulphuric acid to dissolve copper in the bedrock.

The Florence deposit contains 2.5-billion pounds of copper and Taseko plans to produce an average of 85-million pounds a year for the 20-year life-of-mine.
