The National Cleaner Production Centre, South Africa, the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa and the Chemical and Allied Industries’ Association will host an energy efficiency workshop to highlight challenges and provide solutions to the energy challenges facing industry and business. The workshop will be hosted free of charge as a side event at the Africa Energy Indaba in Sandton next week.

To set the scene, the panel discussion will address a topic on Reliable, affordable and sustainable energy supply to industry – the challenges and opportunities. The panel will include experts from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Integrated Energy Centre, the Independent Power Producers’ Association, the NCPC-SA, manufacturing industry (through CAIA) and the retail sector (through the CGCSA).

The panel discussion will take place after a keynote address by Alf Hartzenburg, national project leader of the South African Industrial Energy Efficiency Project and 2016 energy patron of the year (SA Association of Energy Efficiency). The programme will be facilitated by Valerie Geen, currently with United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and former head of energy at the NBI.

Members of the media are invited to attend what is expected to be a hard-hitting look at the day-to-day challenges of rising electricity costs and access to reliable alternatives.

The rest of the day will be filled with presentations on best practice and case studies on workable solutions, including energy management systems, energy modelling (integration of alternatives) and energy efficiency financing. All presentations will be aimed at providing real, practical solutions to companies faced with energy supply and cost challenges.

Between 2010 and 2015, the original phase of the South African Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) Project assisted industrial companies to reduce energy use by 1 220 GWh, saving participating companies some R1.7 billion in energy costs.

Now in its second phase (2016-2019), the South African IEE Project is implemented by the National Cleaner Production Centre, South Africa (NCPC-SA), together with international implementing agent, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
