PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Minerals developer Energia Minerals on Wednesday announced that the company had applied for two permits over historic zinc/lead mines in Italy in an effort to expand its foothold in that country.

If granted, the permits were expected to significantly diversify Energia’s portfolio and offer growth opportunities alongside the company’s flagship Gorno zinc project.

The two permits cover the historic Predil and Salafossa mines, which were located some 400 km from the Gorno project. The Predil mine is estimated to have produced some 30-million tonnes of ore, containing some 1.9-million tonnes of zinc and lead concentrates, and was producing at around 50 000 t/y of lead and zinc at the time of its closing.

The Salafossa mine produced some 10.95-million tonnes of ore, and had an average production rate of 500 000 t/y over a 22-year period.

Energia MD Kim Robinson told shareholders that both projects were attractive and complementary additions to the company’s zinc portfolio in northern Italy.

“With refurbishments and resource development now in full swing at Gorno, we are very pleased to have secured these two new opportunities, which clearly demonstrate our intent to build a substantial long-term zinc business in northern Italy.”

Robinson noted that Energia would start exploration drilling at Predil and Salafossa as soon as the exploration licences were granted.

In the case of Predil, the work would primarily target extensions to the deposit, along with verification of the remaining resource. At Salafossa, Energia’s exploration work would be focused on potential repetitions of the resource.
