EATING THE GOLDEN GOOSE

5th July 2013

Font size: - +

The towering 150% wage demand of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the 60% demand of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) are being directed at a South African gold-mining sector that is well under water, with the gold price below the $1 300/oz level. Cartoonist Darlene senses a case of wanting to eat the goose that lays the golden egg rather that wait for the day that it begins to lay eggs again. The current time is definitely attuned to wage restraint, which one hopes AMCU and the NUM will realise once the wage talks get under way from July 11.
