The Department of Science and Technology, in conjunction with the National Research Foundation and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, will host the second Southern African Young Scientists Summer Program (2nd SA-YSSP) at Stellenbosch University on Friday, 7 February 2014.

The conference will be held under the theme "Holistic Approach to National and Global Challenges". The main objective of this seminar is to create a platform for policy makers, scientists, government officials, academicians and heads of institutions to share ideas and critical insights, discuss issues and collectively come up with methodologies and solutions to complex challenges.  The conference further aims to provide a robust forum for critical dialogue on issues relating to energy, the environment, water and agriculture.

The seminar will also provide an opportunity for excellent young master's and doctoral candidates to advance their research under the direct supervision of senior scientists from IIASA and South African research institutions, and to contribute to IIASA's on-going scientific agenda.
Keynote lectures will be delivered by national and international leaders in their respective research fields, partly drawn from IIASA's widespread network of alumni and collaborators, as well as from the NRF's extensive international networks.

The seminar also will be attended by representatives from the Water Research Commission, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Agricultural Research Council, Human Sciences Research Council, Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection, National Energy Regulatory of South Africa, Departments of Water Affairs, Environmental Affairs, Energy and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
