PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Project house Downer EDI has received contracts worth more than $2-billion from India’s Adani Mining over its billion-dollar Carmichael coal mine, in Queensland.

Downer has been commissioned to act as mining contractor, as well as to construct mine infrastructure at the Carmichael mine.

Under the five-year mining services contract, which could be twice renewed, Downer would be responsible for statutory management and mine operations, drilling and blasting, as well as load and haul of both waste material and coal.

Under the mine infrastructure contract, Downer would be responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction of the on-site infrastructure and preparatory civil works.

The Queensland government recently backed Adani’s plan to develop an integrated mine, rail and port project to bring the $16.5-billion Carmichael project into production.

The rail line would take around two years to build, employ about 2 400 people and would pump up to A$790-million into the Mackay region and over A$900-million into the state economy during its construction phase. The proposed standard gauge greenfield rail line will cost A$2.2-billion and be able to transport 100-million tonnes of coal a year.

The mine and rail project had received both state and commonwealth environmental approval and would be subject to 226 environmental conditions.
