Doornkop South reef project, South Africa
Name and Location
Doornkop South reef project, Gauteng, South Africa.
Client
Harmony Gold Mining Company.
Project Description
The project will entail the three-phase deepening of the Doornkop main shaft to 1 973 m to access the South reef.
As at June 30, 2011, total proven and probable reserves at Doornkop South were 3.2-million tonnes, with a grade of 5.33 g/t gold.
Value
The estimated final capital cost of the project is R1.772-billion.
Duration
Full production is expected in 2015/16.
Latest Developments
The project is in the build-up phase.
In the year ended June Harmony reported higher gold production at Doornkop of 556 kg. Recovered grade increased by 9% from 3.31 g/t to 3.6 g/t and tonnes milled increased by 9%.
In the quarter ended June 30, Doornkop’s recovered grade remained stable at 3.55 g/t, while tonnes milled decreased by 3% quarter-on-quarter to 242 000 t. The decrease in tonnes was because of illegal labour disruptions during the quarter that lasted for about four days and resulted in a 4% decrease in gold production to 859 kg. The appropriate action was taken regarding the labour unrest and no further disruptions were reported during the quarter.
Lower gold production and an increase in electricity tariffs, as well as plant and stores costs during the quarter, resulted in a 13% increase in operating costs to R332 516/kg, impacting on the operating profit quarter-on-quarter.
On Budget and on Time?
Most of the equipping of the main shaft was completed on schedule.
