Bulk materials handling solutions provider Linde Material Handling South Africa has observed steadily increasing interest in Italian manufacturer CVS Ferrari’s brand of equipment from mining companies operating in Africa, with businesses across all industries increasingly moving towards the containerised transportation of goods for security and safety reasons.

“Mining companies and their logistics service providers are realising the security benefits, as well as the resultant cost saving, of moving their mined products from the source to the export terminal, and its final destination, in sealed shipping containers,” says Linde CVS Ferrari brand manager Colin Clegg. He explains that this has created a subsequent demand for equipment such as CVS Ferrari reach stackers and heavy-duty forklifts at mines to manoeuvre these containers onto rail wagons or road transport truck-and-trailer combinations.

Linde is the sole distributor of the CVS Ferrari brand in Africa and, although the equipment has been available on the continent for more than 25 years, Clegg notes that the increased demand for container management solutions has driven a relaunch of the brand this year. This has provided Linde with an opportunity to showcase developments in the brand, which has become increasingly automated through the application of advanced electronics that make the equipment more reliable and remove some of the responsibility of operating the machinery from the operator.

CVS Ferrari products are operating at most of the container terminals in South Africa, as well as in those in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Mozambique, notes Clegg.

Reach Stacker Range
The CVS Ferrari F500 reach stacker series is designed to move shipping containers from the loading site to a container stacking area or to transfer it onto a truck or train for transportation to its final destination.

The reach stacker is also used to unload the container from the trailer or rail wagon and relocate it to a designated position where its contents can be unloaded. In this way, after leaving the source, the loaded container is only handled again when it reaches its final destination, reducing opportunities for the damage or theft of its contents.

The F500 range features seven different models that can cover virtually any container handling and intermodal application. Standardisation and modularity across the range, however, ensure that the wheel size and counterweight are the only components that vary between the models. The reach stackers feature standard six-container-high stacking ability, the best weight distribution in their class, unique dynamic stability control features and a drive optimiser function to increase operational safety and reduce tyre wear.

The 250 kW engine features a high-quality hydraulic system, while the frame is designed to achieve the best structural strength in the market and has been developed with the optimisation of component layout at top of mind. The powertrain is centrally positioned to provide the best possible filtered airflow and to increase the hydraulic oil system’s efficiency. The high lateral chassis walls, moreover, provide high sound insulation while ensuring torsion and deflection resistance.

The F500 series is the first of its kind to fit electrohydraulics – modern load-sensing distribution valves that are managed by a sixth-sense hardware and software system. This enables the equipment to react faster to changes in power demand and modulation than hydraulic- piloted load-sensing systems. This instantaneous response saves operational time and fuel while protecting the engine from the unnecessary stress of stalling, extending its service life.

The container spreader attached to the end of the reach stacker’s boom features a tilting option that allows for the quick discharge of the product either onto the ground or into a hopper for loading onto a ship.

The range also includes a roomy cockpit that incorporates ergonomic solutions for the operator’s comfort and to ensure ease of operation. A powerful on-board computer integrates the reach stacker’s operating system’s data and parameters, providing real-time information, driver aids, enhanced safety, system integrity protection, in-depth fault diagnostics, functional and operational recording and real-time updated key performance indicators.

An optional, remote data-monitoring hardware and software package can, moreover, transfer data to a server, making information readily available to the user on a series of devices. The package includes tools that provide a live status of the truck and fleet activity, remote systems telemetry, a multilevel important-event alert process, an interactive database of functional and operational machine data history, data analysis and table and graphic data elaboration for reporting purposes.
