The Damco Sustainability Progress Report 2013 describes the sustainability performance, achievements and challenges of Damco’s global logistics operations in 2013, and its targets for 2014.

As part of Damco’s commitment to being a responsible partner to customers, suppliers, employees and investors, Damco integrates sustainability into the way it does business, sets targets and reports on key material issues.

“Our commitment to sustainability demonstrates how we are planning for growth with the care and due diligence needed to secure long-term success,” says Natalia Olynec, Global Head of Sustainability, Damco. “We do this by striving to implement our standards and values consistently in changing and diverse markets.”

Key results of the Damco Sustainability Report 2013 include:

Environment

  • A 21% improvement in carbon efficiency since 2009. The target is 30% reduction in CO2 emissions for Damco’s own operations by the end of 2014. Damco works closely with industry to improve the availability and quality of environmental data for ocean container transport and is a member of the Clean Cargo Working Group.
  • Energy savings by installing more efficient lighting systems in Damco facilities in the US, Canada and Indonesia.

Health & Safety

  • Reduction of already low levels of Lost Time Incident Frequency by 18% to 0.42, with zero fatalities.
  • Prioritisation of the health and safety of employees by instilling a responsibility culture through training and reporting lines to the top of the organisation.

Social Responsibility

  • Damco is an active member of the Logistics Emergency Teams, Maersk Group’s partnership with the humanitarian Logistics Cluster, led by the UN World Food Program (WFP). In 2013, the LET was deployed in response to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines where Damco offered pro bono logistics services and expertise.

Responsible Business Practices

  • Damco maintains its reputation as a responsible business partner by ensuring a clean and transparent supply chain. The Responsible Procurement programme trained over 60 staff in 2013 and registered 296 suppliers who have pledged to adhere to Damco’s Third Party Code of Conduct.
  • Low-level corruption still continues to be a business risk for Damco and to mitigate this risk, Damco has trained 75% of its high- or medium-risk employees either in person or online.
  • Damco, already a member of the World Economic Forum’s Partnership Against Corruption Initiative, joined the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network in 2013.
