JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Anglo American CEO Mark Cutifani has been appointed chairperson of De Beers, succeeding Cynthia Carroll, who resigned from both companies late last year.

Cutifani, who, in January, replaced Carroll in the top job at the UK-headquartered Anglo, would step in as chair of the diamond producer immediately.

“I am honoured to join and lead the De Beers board. The company’s 125-year heritage, experienced management team and unparalleled understanding of the unique nature of the diamond market, make it the world’s leading diamond company,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

De Beers CEO Philippe Mellier welcomed Cutifani to the company, adding: “I look forward to working with Mark as we find new ways to enhance De Beers’ leadership position across the diamond pipeline and create value for our shareholders, partners, customers and consumers.”

The De Beers Group, in which Anglo American had a 85% stake, had diamond mining operations across Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Canada, boasting a workforce of about 23 000.

The rough diamond dealer, exploration firm and diamond miner currently produced about 35% of global rough diamond supply.
