CRAZY CHARTER CROQUET:

3rd November 2017

Even mining communities are up in arms with the way Minerals Minister Mosebenzi Zwane and his Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) have unilaterally gazetted Mining Charter III, an unworkable document. Given the 0.7% growth rate to which the South African economy has slumped, Chamber of Mines president Mxolisi Mgojo has rightfully called for a new collective mining vision that is viable, inclusive and transformative. Arriving at that vision necessitates an abandoning of the crazy charter croquet that Zwane and his DMR have been playing. They have had their chance and they have failed. What is now essential is the involvement of many Ministries and their many departments, along with labour unions and representatives of civil society, to ensure that communities are no longer up in arms and the common good prevails.
