PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Production at the New Elk coal mine, in Colorado, is continuing, albeit at a reduced pace, says ASX-listed Allegiance Coal.

The miner on Monday confirmed that three cases of Covid-19 had been reported at the site, where two production units were currently operating.

The first unit comprises a crew of 30 spread across both a day and night shift, five days a week, while the second unit comprises 15 crew operating a day shift, five days a week.

Two cases were reported at the first unit’s day shift, which resulted in the quarantine of all the first unit’s day-shift staff until the earlier of a negative Covid test result, or August 21.

One case of Covid was also reported from the night shift at the first unit, which has resulted in the isolation of some of the crew for a similar period.

The mine was expected to return to its previous production levels by August 23, Allegiance said, adding that the lost production would impact on the mine meeting the schedule for the first laycan period for the first vessel of steelmaking coal sold to Asia.

The company is in discussions with the buyers to reschedule the delivery date.
