Project description
The Environmental Council of Zambia (ECZ) has approved a new flash smelting plant for Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), which will produce 300 000 t/y of finished copper.

The ultramodern smelter will be environment-friendly, as its operations will reduce sulphur emissions arising from copper production from the current levels of 50% to 4%.

Value
The project will cost an estimated €48-million.

Duration
The commissioning of the new smelter is scheduled for 2007.

Breakdown of main contracts
Not stated.

Client
KCM.

Latest developments
Outokumpu Technology will supply slag cleaning furnaces for the project in a contract valued at about €28-million. This order is a continuation of the €20-million contract with KCM that Outokumpu Technology announced in January 2006 for the flash smelting furnace and related engineering.

Outokumpu Technology’s scope of supply covers the engineering of the slag cleaning and cobalt recovery processes, the delivery of electric furnace equipment, and the related supervision services for installation and commissioning. The equipment deliveries are scheduled to be completed in August 2007.

Participants
Outokumpu Technology.

On budget and on time?
Construction of the smelter was due to have started in February 2006, but was delayed after residents petitioned the ECZ, demanding compensation from Konkola before agreeing to move.
