PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Operations at the Mount Lyell mine, owned by Copper Mines of Tasmania, have been suspended following the death of a worker.

The company on Friday confirmed that an accident had occurred at the mine, fatally injuring an employee of mining contractor Barminco.

It was believed that the loader operator was caught in a mud rush in the lower levels of the mine. While paramedics were called in, the worker remained unresponsive.

The Australian Workers’ Union pointed out that this was the third fatality at the mine in less than six weeks, after two employees were killed on December 9 following a 35 m fall from a maintenance platform in the mine’s main shaft.

Operations at the mine have been suspended while investigations into the incident take place. Tasmania Police and Worksafe Tasmania were currently at the site.
