Winning a trip to the continent’s leading supply chain management event, SAPICS 2017, in Cape Town this month was a lucky break that will put Zimbabwean Elvis Mushayavanhu on a new career path.

The competition – run by SAPICS and SA Tourism – attracted entries from Kenya, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Ethiopia and Uganda; the prize was worth ZAR30,000 (about US$2,200) and gave Mushayavanhu return flights, accommodation and access to conference talks, workshops and site visits.

Representing his company Green Fuel, he said his encounter with SAPICS had been “a life-changing experience that will assist me to re-design myself professionally, while focusing on enhancing my supply chain skills and setting out the path I would like to follow to further my career in supply chain further.”

He said he now aimed at becoming certified before year-end with the supply chain qualifications CPIM and CLTD.

“With the enthusiasm I now have, I am committed to getting registered and sitting for the exams just as soon as I am ready,” he said. “Thanks to everyone that played a part in allowing me to attend a conference that has given me light and a new direction to my career.”

The annual SAPICS conference – held this year at Century City – attracted about 800 supply chain professionals from Africa and abroad, to network and learn from speakers including Sean Culey, Clem Sunter, Steve Georgevitch and Tanya Kabalin. The event also includes an exhibition of the latest products and services, and a range of in-depth workshops.
