Hydraulic tools manufacturer Hi-Force is making design changes to its ToughLift jacking system, with new models expected to be released in 2016, says company marketing director Laura Thompson.

“The jacking system provides users in the mining industry with an easy and safe method of lifting materials haulers to perform critical maintenance and breakdown repair work,” she explains.

She says Hi-Force’s research and development team is working on the improvements to the system, which was first launched in 2010 at the company’s headquarters in Daventry, in the UK.

Thompson tells Mining Weekly that, since its launch, the ToughLift jacking system, currently used by mining companies such as Anglo American, First Quantum Minerals and BHP Billiton, has proven to be an invaluable addition to Hi-Force’s product offering.

“Plant operators at mines and quarries demand minimal maintenance and repair downtime of capital-intensive equipment. The ToughLift jacking system has met these requirements.”

She adds that, owing to its sturdy design, user friendliness and versatility, the ToughLift is much sought after for routine maintenance as well as the service and repair on earthmovers by mining companies across Africa.

As with all other high- pressure hydraulic equipment, basic operator training of the jacking system is required, primarily for safety reasons, Thompson says, adding that the system is easy to use.

“With lifting capacities ranging from 50 t to 200 t, and a choice of hydraulic lift-height options on the 100 t and 200 t versions, the ToughLift is the strongest and most versatile lifting jack on the market,” she says.

All models of the ToughLift jacking system are powered by an integrated electric or air-driven hydraulic pump unit. She adds that they feature a remote and push-button hand pendant control unit, with a 6 m control cable for safe and easy operation also allowing for remote operation of the system from the jacking point.

Thompson notes the ToughLift jacking system incorporates a number of patented features, including a multipositional transport and lifting handle and a unique swivel jacking base to guarantee safe and correct positioning of the lifting cylinder.

The system is also fitted with large-diameter wheels and solid rubber tyres for easy manoeuvring; all models are narrow in width and have a smaller footprint, compared with competitor models.

A large variety of optional extras are also available to complement the range, including mechanical load holding blocks and swivel load caps, as well as mechanical-locking and slip- lock extensions – all of which further increase safety features, to the benefit of the operator, says Thompson.

The Mori Seiki CNC Lathe SL603 machine, housed at Hi-Force’s manufacturing facility in Daventry, is primarily used to manufacture high- tonnage cylinders and all models of the cylinders fitted in the ToughLift jacking system.

“With a chuck diameter of 600 mm, the SL603 can machine cylinder bodies with a capacity of up to 1 000 t, with stroke lengths longer than 760 mm, thus significantly reducing the delivery time for high-tonnage and special design cylinders, which are key products for the South African market,” concludes Thompson.
