There is unprecedented interest in NSW Mining Scholarships for secondary and tertiary students which aim to deliver a pipeline of highly skilled workers and sustain the sector into the future. This year, the NSW Minerals Council will support a record 82 students across the State to study a minerals-related degree or course - including 43 in the Hunter – comprising both new and existing students in the rolling three year program. The nine Hunter students who have been selected for this year’s new intake will be presented with their Scholarships in Newcastle this Friday at Skills on Show sponsored by NSW Mining. This complements the efforts of NSW mining companies to attract the next generation of skills and talent including funding apprenticeship places at business supplying mines and supporting indigenous students’ efforts to complete the HSC and go on to apprenticeships or university.

NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee will present each of the new students with their certificates and said the interest in the NSW Mining Scholarships was increasing year on year. “These new figures show that more than forty Hunter students are receiving support in their studies through this program and we’re expecting that number to grow over the coming years as we receive more applications and more of our member companies participate,” Mr Galilee said. “This is such a diverse industry and there are big opportunities for advancement. Mining needs a constant stream of quality people to fill roles in a huge range occupations from machinery operators, IT, security, construction and explosives to haulage, mechanics, engineering, electricians, surveyors, scientists, geologists and many more.

“Mining is currently experiencing a transitional period within the wider economy yet it remains a linchpin of the Hunter region and there will be a strong demand for skills in the decades ahead. “Whether you’re a student or someone looking for a new challenge, NSW mining is an exciting and rewarding industry to be a part of with big opportunities, big potential and big careers on offer. “NSW Miners can live and work in established communities like Newcastle, Cessnock, Maitland, Singleton and Muswellbrook. And it’s a career that can take you around the world.” NSW Mining is preparing for Skills on Show sponsored by NSW Mining at the Newcastle Regional Show, its major Careers & Education expo for 2013 in the Hunter. “We are proud to be the presenting sponsor of this great event for the first time, after a three year involvement. It’s a fantastic showcase for the region’s talented people and its important industries.

“A state of the art underground mine truck will be on display, featuring the latest technology in order to safely transport miners deep underground. We’re also launching new “In Conversation With…” sessions where industry leaders and careers advisors from organisations like the Hunter Business Chamber, University of Newcastle, University of New South Wales and TAFE NSW will be available to talk about careers and to offer advice.”
