Pumping solutions company Letaba Dewatering, a division of industrial group Set Point, recently introduced several new pumps to its product portfolio to enhance its offering for the mining industry.

Letaba Dewatering showcased the Varisco ST-R self-priming trash pump at the 2014 Electra Mining Africa trade show in September last year.

The Varisco ST-R series comprises recirculating self-prime pumps suitable for handling liquids with large solids in suspensions. The pumps are mounted above and away from the liquid to be pumped, enabling easy inspection and maintenance of the pump.

“These pumps are the best choice for difficult pumping applications with large solids in suspension,” says Letaba Dewatering sales manager Nic Boer, emphasising that they are easy to install and have replaceable wear parts.

Further, the pumps feature front rear wear plates, which protect the impeller and the seal housing from wear as well as reduce overall maintenance costs, says Boer.

Letaba Dewatering has significant experience and expertise in the pumping industry. The company’s product line that caters for the mining industry includes Varisco self-priming pumps, Sakuragawa submersibles, Wilden air operated double diaphragm pumps and Madoda nuisance water pumps.

Moreover, the company offers a 24 hour a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year rental service. Pumps in its rental fleet vary from 50 mm to 200 mm in diameter. The rental fleet comprises four different categories, which include positive-displacement pumps, solids-handling pumps, centrifugal pumps and electric submersible pumps.

To further support the rental demand, the company recently constructed a diesel trailer unit with four six-inch inlets and four six-inch discharges – making it the first of its kind in South Africa.

The new Varisco JS 12-400 610 dewatering pump, also known as ‘Zambezi’, weighs about 800 kg and can pump up to 1 200 m3/h, or about 400 ℓ/s, at a 15 m head. The trailer weighs more than 3 t.

“This unit is perfect for customers who need to move sizable volumes of water, but not a big head. Only one of these is needed, thereby saving space and costs,” says Letaba Dewatering rental sales manager Sarel Bekker.

The Zambezi unit is currently rented to a major mining operation, and reports indicate that the client is impressed with the performance, he adds.

“The unit is also proving to be in high demand, as we have plans to rent it out for another major dewatering project soon,” he says.

Meanwhile, another division of Letaba Group, Tuscany Pumps has introduced a new range of EcoAir rotary vane vacuum pumps and the Saer range of centrifugal pumps to its product line.

In addition to being easy to install and operate, the EcoAir rotary vane vacuum pumps that are also supplied by Letaba are specifically designed to provide reliability, higher ultimate vacuum and low maintenance, says Letaba Group operations manager Deon Steenkamp.

“The pumps’ quiet and efficient design make them ideal for freeze drying, laboratory vacuum, distillation, television tube and light bulb manufacturing, refrigeration, electronics and any industry where smaller pumps with deeper vacuum are required,” he adds.

The Saer range comprises a complete range from surface to submersible pumps and motors with power up to 400 hp, which was also showcased at the trade show.

Steenkamp emphasises that Tuscany Pumps has become a well-known brand in the fields of vacuum pumping, high viscosity pumping, high volume air conveyance and positive displacement pumping.

“The ongoing relationships formed with our principals, combined with the top-end product quality and service levels, ensures that Tuscany Pumps is able to supply reliable pumping solutions, on time,” he concludes.
