Project Description
The Comet Ridge project has total Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource of 66-million tons.

A prefeasibility study completed on the project has confirmed that it has mine development potential as a small producer of high-quality semihard coking coal for the export market, producing up to 450 000 t/y of coal for a minimum of eight years.

Opencut mining will be performed by an experienced second-tier contractor, employing a combination of hydraulic excavators, dozers, trucks, scrapers and front-end loaders.

Fixed infrastructure required to support the operation will include:
• a rail spur, loop and train-loading system;
• a coal handling and preparation plant; including associated facilities such as a run-of-mine system and product piles;
• building and associated facilities for heavy-vehicle and equipment maintenance and servicing, light-vehicle servicing, stores, administration, a fuel farm, jacking pads and hardstands, car parks, a bathhouse, crib rooms, a first aid station, muster areas and meeting areas;
• permanent roads, including access roads, internal haul roads and light-vehicle roads;
• services, including power, water, communication systems, sewerage and waste disposal;
• water management structures, including dams, drains, pumps and pipe systems; and
• site services, including fences, fire breaks and access tracks.

Earliest first coal production is expected in the fourth quarter of 2015.
