Multinational technology company ABB’s YuMi collaborative robot is playing a transformative role by contributing to both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility, making it an essential tool in modern manufacturing and beyond, says ABB robotics local division manager Julian Pillay.

He notes that the robots are optimised to reduce energy consumption through precise motion control and programming, minimising unnecessary movements during operations.

YuMi’s ability to automate repetitive and intricate tasks helps manufacturers cut down on material waste while improving production efficiency, he highlights, noting that, by ensuring better quality control and reducing rework, YuMi contributes to more sustainable production practices.

Specifically, YuMi’s features have significantly improved production efficiency across various sectors, such as an electronics assembly, where YuMi’s precision in handling small, delicate components has enhanced speed and accuracy on production lines.

In the automotive sector, meanwhile, YuMi is employed to assemble small components, working safely alongside humans without the need for safety barriers.

YuMi’s versatility is further showcased in the banking sector, where it is used to test the security and durability of ATMs.

“Its ability to work collaboratively with human workers makes it an ideal solution for tasks that require both precision and adaptability,” Pillay tells Engineering News.

Supporting Energy Efficiency

YuMi’s design and advanced safety features play a crucial role in improving energy efficiency.

The dual arms allow YuMi to perform complex tasks that would typically require multiple robots or human intervention.

Pillay adds that YuMi’s collision detection and motion control systems ensure safe operation, reducing the need for downtime owing to accidents or system resets.

Advancements in YuMi’s design have further enhanced its energy efficiency.

ABB introduced a single-arm version of YuMi in 2017, which is more compact and versatile, contributing to lower energy consumption while maintaining the same level of performance.

Pillay adds that ABB remains committed to continuous innovation, which includes ensuring that YuMi remains an energy- efficient and sustainable solution as industries increasingly adopt robotics.

According to Pillay, ABB incorporates energy-saving technologies, such as power regeneration and brake energy recovery, in its OmniCore controllers, which can reduce energy consumption by up to 20%. The use of lightweight materials such as magnesium alloy for YuMi’s arms also contributes to lower energy consumption during operations.

In line with its support for the circular economy, ABB also offers services to refurbish and upgrade existing robots, extending their lifespan and reducing the need for new resources.
