Tired rescue workers are seen sleeping near the site of last month’s devastating gas explosion at the privately owned Jinshangou colliery, in Chongqing’s Yongchuan district of China. All 33 coal miners trapped underground were found dead after more than 200 firefighters, police and specialists tried in vain to rescue them. Last year, 598 people died in mining accidents in China, the world’s largest producer and consumer of coal, which is closing more than 1 000 outdated mines as part of a plan to cut excess production at a time of low coal prices.
