CLIMBING UP THE PERCEPTION LADDER:

South Africa is slowly climbing back up the Fraser Institute ladder after falling into the nether regions because of errant behaviour in the Minerals Ministry. The Fraser Institute, a research body that has been giving South African mining a hiding for years now, is recognising South Africa’s improved policy framework and the working together of government and Minerals Council South Africa to do what is best for the South African people. South Africa’s position has shifted from the bottom to just below the middle. The top jurisdiction globally for investment is Nevada, in the US, which moved up from third place in 2017 to the top of the pile in 2018. One senses that South Africa is incentivised to keep moving its mining industry upwards in the knowledge that it is the biggest contributor to integrated economic growth and foreign exchange generation.
