Citic stops production at Sino to sort out technical issues
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Hong Kong-listed Citic Pacific has halted production at its Sino iron-ore project, in Western Australia, in an effort to solve teething problems.
The miner said at the end of last week that technical and operational issues had frequently interrupted production at the Sino project, where load commissioning started at the end of 2012, and the first production line started producing concentrate.
Following an analysis of the situation, Citic concluded that the most effective and efficient way to get to continuous production was to stop daily production, allowing engineers to fully address the technical issues.
It was estimated that the overhaul would take around two months.
Citic pointed out to shareholders that it was not unusual for significant industrial projects to undergo an extended commissioning period, and added that the ultimate objective was to address the problems, allowing the line to achieve a smooth and stable operation over the coming decades.
Meanwhile, repair work was also under way at the second production line, after a gearless motor drive called for repair. The miner said that the damaged stator in the drive had now been pulled out of its housing, and repair work was under way.
The aim was to have the gearless motor drive back in operation by July, when load commissioning could begin.
The Sino project was designed to produce some 24-million tons of iron-ore concentrate a year, supplying ore to Citic’s own steel plants, as well as other steel producers in China.
