Chirundu uranium joint-venture project, Zambia
Name and location
Chirundu uranium joint-venture project, Zambia.
Project description
The prefeasibility study (PFS) on the Chirundu uranium project envisages uranium ores being mined initially from the Njame deposit only, with mining and heap leaching to start at the Gwabe site once Njame has been exhausted.
Njame North has an indicated resource of 3,9-million tons of U3O8 at 388 parts per million (ppm), and an inferred resource of 5,2-million tons of U3O8 at 275 ppm.
The Gawbe deposit has an indicated resource of 0,9-million tons at 196 ppm of U3O8 and an inferred resource of four-million tons at 303 ppm of U3O8.
All mining will be from openpits, with ore stacked as a series of cells on a single-lined leach pad. Waste will be stored on a waste dump. The mine is expected to deliver 1,3-million pounds of U3O8 a year over a five-to six-year project life.
Value
The estimated capital costs of the project amount to $68-million preproduction costs with an additional $21-million required for deferred cost.
