AGerman chemical engineer has designed a duvet that reduces the relative humidity underneath the covers by 25%, compared with conventional duvets. Medical studies confirmed that its use reduced the irritation of certain skin and medical conditions.

German duvet and drapery company Sanders development and new business leader Dr Günter Schulz studied conven- tional duvets and found that the fabric weave used to contain the down feathers was too tight to enable sufficient moisture exchange, resulting in humid conditions under the duvet.

“People like warm and dry conditions. Humid conditions can irritate sensitive skin conditions and can cause acute discomfort in people who sweat more easily – for example, menopausal women.”

The new duvet, called Climabalance, has been the subject of 15 different scientific studies. Studies of the sleep patterns of people using the new duvets have shown that they sleep longer, more intensely and, thus, sleep more efficiently, he says.

The new duvets have a pure cotton cover and are down-filled. Sanders also produces polyester-filled Climabalance duvets.

The duvets have mesh-covered openings to enable water vapour to escape, while retaining heat under the duvets.

Sanders manufactures summer, winter and mild-weather Climabalance duvets and exports finished duvets to countries in Europe and to South Africa.

“The Climabalance duvets clean as easily as conventional duvets, but provide improved comfort for users. We have seen good demand in Europe, the US and Asia, and foresee good demand for the new duvets from hotels and the tourism sector in South and Southern Africa,” concludes Schultz.
