PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Brazilian Department of Mines has approved a trial mining licence application over ASX-listed Centaurus Metals’ Candonga direct shipping ore (DSO) project.

The approval, which was subject to the receipt of an operating licence from the state environmental agency, represented the penultimate approval required before the issue of the formal trial mining licence, Centaurus said on Monday.

MD Darren Gordon noted that the company was continuing to tick the boxes of its permitting and predevelopment programme, with the trial mining licence approval coming less than nine months after it was lodged.

“Our focus will now be to finalise the environmental approval process to allow on-site development work to commence, while also accelerating the full mining lease application to underpin future expansion above 300 000 t/y,” Gordon said.

Centaurus was hoping to start production at Candonga in the second quarter of the year, at a rate of 300 000 t/y, and the operating licence and final trial mining approval was expected in July, facilitating the start of product sales.

The project was expected to require a capital investment of A$3.6-million, and would have a life-of-mine cash cost of A$14.90/t.
