JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Quebec-based Canada Lithium has announced a three-week suspension of commissioning activities at its process plant near Val d’Or for maintenance and upgrades.

The company, which produces lithium carbonate used to manufacture batteries for consumer electronics, said on Wednesday it would install an acid cleaning circuit, a bicarbonate recovery circuit and upgrade some pumping capacity during the shutdown, which recently appointed plant manager Michael Seawright would oversee.

Canada Lithium stated that it would seek to enhance the quality of its product with the bicarbonate recovery circuit. Its product quality is currently in the range of 99.5% to 99.9%.

The company recently completed its first shipment of sample battery-grade lithium carbonate product to Japan, Korea and China. It has a 12 000 t/y offtake agreement with Chinese commodity trader Tewoo-ERDC and a 5 000 t/y supply deal with Japanese group Marubeni.

Representatives from Tewoo-ERDC visited the operation last week and representatives from Marubeni are due to be on site next week.

Canada Lithium said it planned to restart mining operations a few weeks after the plant start-up. Initially, the feed for the plant would come from the 100 000 t of stockpiled ore at the site.
