Campo Morado mine, Mexico
Name: Campo Morado mine.
Location: The Campo Morado mine is located in Guerrero state, Mexico.
Controlling Company: Nyrstar.
Brief History: Campo Morado started commercial production in April 2009. In January 2011, Nyrstar successfully completed its acquisition of Farallon, the owner of the Campo Morado multimetal mining operation.
Brief Description: The Campo Morado mine area comprises 12 000 ha in six mining concessions that are about 160 km south-southwest of Mexico City and comprises five mineral deposits – the currently mined G9, El Largo, Naranjo, El Rey and Reforma.
Mining Method: Underground multimetal mine.
Products: Zinc concentrate, copper concentrate, silver and gold as by-products.
Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The G-9 mine includes a processing plant and a tailings dam.
Geology/Mineralisation: Mineralisation at Campo Morado consists of polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, hosted within an upper Jurassic to lower Cretaceous sequence of felsic to inter-mediate flows, tuffs and fragmental rocks, as well as fine-grained sedimentary rocks.
Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves, according to a report published on February 7, were 1.26-million tonnes, with a grade of 5.46% zinc, 1.12% copper, 154.27 g/t silver and 1.90 g/t gold.
Resources: Total measured and indicated resources, according to a report published on February 7, were 11.02-million tonnes, with a grade of 4.15% zinc, 0.88% copper, 0.97% lead, 132.13 g/t silver and 1.97 g/t gold.
Prospects: Additionally, the current resource model is being reviewed to delineate higher grade portions for delineation by the 2013 drilling programme and inclusion in the new four-year mine plan. The longer- term exploration drilling programme has also been successful in locating new mineralised areas below current deposits and along strike.
