Building competitive advantage across international markets
Multotec chairperson Thomas Holtz discusses how the company has adapted its manufacturing, products and service model to compete across international markets while retaining the capabilities developed in South Africa. South African mining equipment manufacturer Multotec has had to adapt its manufacturing, products and service model to compete across diverse international markets, while retaining the technical capabilities developed at home.
The company has grown from its South African base to operate in more than 100 countries, but chairperson Thomas Holtz says international competitiveness cannot be built around a standardised approach. Different commodities, customers and operating environments require different products, levels of service and support.
In Part 1 of Episode 1 of IN FOCUS: Built to Last – The Future of South Africa’s Industrial Businesses, he discusses how Multotec has structured its operations to respond to those differences, including establishing local manufacturing, assembly and service capabilities where proximity to the customer is critical.
He also highlights the industrial ecosystem that supports manufacturing in South Africa, from specialised skills and suppliers to subcontractors, and how Multotec has sought to build similar capabilities as it expands into African markets.
Watch Part 1 of Episode 1 for more on Multotec’s approach to international competitiveness and what its experience reveals about the capabilities required for South African industrial businesses to build and sustain a presence beyond their home market.
